Expansion Continues at Disney California Adventure Park

As we look forward to 2011, we are excited to share that we are making great progress on the expansion of Disney California Adventure park. The year 2010 has been very exciting. In June, we made a big splash with “World of Color,” the nighttime spectacular that is wowing guests every night. On October 29, we reached an exciting milestone with Cars Land with the topping out of the Cadillac Mountain range – about 125 feet in the air. And, many of you have seen The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure and Goofy’s Sky School coming to life along the parade route. Both are scheduled to open in 2011 along with new restaurants and shops as we finish the entire Paradise Pier expansion.

Now, as we move toward a new year, expansion continues. In January, our efforts move to the front of the park.

On Jan. 4, we will begin making way for a new entrance modeled after the legendary Pan-Pacific Auditorium. This means, the “CALIFORNIA” letters will be removed, and we plan to save these icons for possible future use. Now’s the time to get your photos!

As this work continues, we are making adjustments to the Disney California Adventure Main Entrance area, including relocation of some Guest service areas. We’ll keep you informed about those here on the Disney Parks Blog as soon as we have specific dates and locations.

Also on Jan. 4, we will begin the transformation of the Sunshine Plaza area into Buena Vista Street inside the Main Entrance. When complete, it will represent Los Angeles as it was when Walt Disney arrived on the west coast in the 1920s.

Terminator X opens at Six Flags Mexico

Terminator X: A Laser Battle for Salvation is a themed indoor laser skirmish attraction created by Lynton V. Harris of Sudden Impact Entertainment.

Groups of 30 guests enter a briefing room. Each player is given instructions and battle gear in this room. They are then ushered into the themed arena where the combat takes place. For approximately five minutes two teams of 15 not only battle against each other but also against the intelligent arena and against 12 characters from the Terminator series.

The first Terminator X attraction debuted at the Royal Adelaide Show in Australia in 2009. It was then moved to Adventure World in Perth, Western Australia later that year for the summer season. In early 2010, that particular installation was shipped to the United States. By May 2010, the attraction had opened at both La Ronde in Montreal, Canada, and at Sunway Lagoon in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia.

Ben 10, the smash-hit cartoon hero, is set to make the award-winning Drayton Manor Theme Park, near Tamworth, Staffordshire, his new home.

In a move that will delight tens of thousands of youngsters, Europe’s first ever Ben 10 roller coaster ride will open at Drayton Manor for Easter 2011, following an exclusive deal between the park and Turner CN Enterprises, the brand’s licensor.

Ben 10 is a hugely popular children’s programme, broadcast on Cartoon Network, which follows the adventures of 10-year-old Ben Tennyson, who is able to turn into a variety of alien superheroes, each with unique powers, thanks to his mysterious Omnitrix watch.

The exciting new roller coaster will be part of an amazing Cartoon Network Street, which will include a fully branded restaurant and shop, selling Ben 10 merchandise and products relating to other shows on Cartoon Network.

Children and their parents will get to revel in the world of Ben 10 even before they get on the ride with queue entertainment. Full details of the ride will be unveiled closer to the launch.

Colin Bryan, Managing Director of Drayton Manor Theme Park, said: “Drayton Manor has a reputation for firsts. We opened Europe’s first Thomas Land£ in 2008, and we have Europe’s first stand up rollercoaster (Shockwave), as well as the world’s first stand up tower drop ride (Apocalypse).

“Drayton Manor first opened to the public in 1950. Over the past 61 years we have always invested in first class rides and attractions to ensure our visitors have the best possible day out. This is why I am confident that this new Ben 10 themed rollercoaster will be an amazing and popular addition to the park.”

Turner CN Enterprises’ UK Licensing Director Graham Saltmarsh said: “We’re thrilled to be launching a Ben 10 roller coaster ride in the UK, which quite literally is set to take the brand to new heights! It’s very much in line with the action and excitement that fans associate with their hero and a fantastic profile-raising event, which enables us to create another touch point for Ben 10 fans to interact with their favourite character.”

Drayton Manor, the UK’s biggest independently owned theme park, welcomes over 1.2 million visitors every year.

Ferrari World inaugurated

HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, last night officially inaugurated Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, the world’s first Ferrari theme park, on Yas Island.

Pressing a button in the shape of the iconic Ferrari World Abu Dhabi roof structure, HH Sheikh Mohammed paid tribute to the vision of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, “who is keen on turning the UAE into a global magnet of sports and recreational tourism through a diverse portfolio of projects that will have substantial impact on the national economy and social development.”

“The ambitious development projects in progress in Abu Dhabi will help position the Emirate prominently on the global map as a sought after tourist destination. Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is a quality addition to our tourism industry which is one of the pillars of our national economy,” Sheikh Mohammed said.

Hosted by Aldar Properties and Ferrari SpA, the event attracted 2000 VIP guests including HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler’s Representative in the Western Region; Lt. General HH Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister; Sheikh Dr HH Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, Member of the Executive Council; HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Finance Department; Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research; Sheikh Ahmed bin Saif Al Nahyan, Member of the Executive Council; Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnoon, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority; Mohammed Ahmed Al Bawardi, Secretary General of the Executive Council; and senior government officials.

Guests including Mr Franco Frattini, Italian Foreign Minister; Giorgio Starace, Italian Ambassador to the UAE; Mr Luca di Montezemolo, Chairman of Ferrari; and Ferrari Formula 1 team drivers Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa were treated to a spectacular show to celebrate the achievement of Aldar and Ferrari in delivering the world’s largest indoor theme park.

The show – titled Power meets Elegance – was inspired by the history of Abu Dhabi and the story of Ferrari. Seen through the eyes of a young boy, the vision-like story weaves these two strands together to the fulfilment of the dream of Ferrari World Abu Dhabi. The two cultures are blended together through an incredible mix of live action, acrobatics, advanced film projection techniques and original music.

The show starts with an incredible aerial dance of the traditional UAE pearl divers surrounded by a 3D marine world projection. The atmosphere then escalates into a magnificent dance of flying dancers and Ferrari engine pistons arriving to the first climax when Puccini's "un bel di" is sung by an opera singer.

HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan launched the grand finale which explodes with an incredible series of gigantic projections, flying pearl divers, live orchestra and a unique and amazing firework display that enhances to the rhythm of the music the whole Ferrari World Abu Dhabi building.

Following the spectacular show, HH Sheikh Mohammed toured the park, intermingling with the guests and congratulating the developers for what he termed as an outstanding achievement.

A record number of more than 140 Ferraris travelled across the United Arab Emirates to join the event guided to Yas Island by Abu Dhabi Police. Ferrari Middle East & Africa in association with Al Tayer Motors, the official Ferrari importer for the UAE, and the Emirates’ Ferrari Owners' Club organized the event as a tribute to the grand opening of Ferrari World Abu Dhabi.

Ferrari World Abu Dhabi has already captured the imagination of thousands of visitors from around the globe with a range of unique and thrilling attractions including Formula Rossa, the world’s fastest roller coaster, and Speed of Magic, the region’s first four dimensional fantasy ride.

Ahmed Al Sayegh, Chairman of Aldar Properties:

“We are indeed privileged by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed’s presence at inauguration of Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, an achievement that coincides with our celebration of the UAE National Day. It also gives us great pleasure to welcome His Excellency Franco Frattini, the Italian Foreign Minister and the distinguished guests to the grand opening. Aldar’s work with Ferrari was a

meeting of minds with a clear vision to create an experience that is unique, fun and inspirational.

This unique new attraction at the heart of Yas Island is creating excitement, not just here in Abu Dhabi, but around the world. With more than 500 million people watching the final race in this year’s Formula 1 season only three weeks ago, the eyes of the world will instantly recognize this amazing structure.

Yas Island is an integral part of the government’s ambitious strategy to develop tourism in the Emirate. We are extremely proud at Aldar to be able to contribute to this strong vision through our development work here, and across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.”

Luca di Montezemolo, Chairman of Ferrari:

“I would like to thank all those who made this dream a reality, and in particular our partners and the leadership of Abu Dhabi. The park just 4 years ago was a project, an idea, maybe even a too ambitious idea, and it is now a fantastic reality.

We are very proud of our partners Aldar who share with Ferrari the same passion, the same vision, the same will to go beyond. This park combines innovative technology and tradition; it is dedicated not only to Ferrari fans and car enthusiastic, but to the whole family. It has the real touch of Ferrari: how things really are for us, with our exclusive GT road cars and racing cars, but also our history and our cultural background.

Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is a symbol, built actively on the heritage that Italy represents for the world. But I also like to think that this Ferrari Theme park can be a small contribution to reinforcing the bridge between our two cultures.”

Blame Dreamworld for this Summer's Most Catchy Anthem

Dreamworld has enlisted the creativity of one of Brisbane’s most exciting up and coming bands, Blame Ringo, to write the anthem that is the soundtrack for the park’s Summer FUNomenon.

In celebration of the themepark’s 30th birthday in 2011, Blame Ringo have given new life to the park’s memorable 1980’s advertising jingle “Dreamworld One Day Holiday”, creating a brand new tune that is inescapably catchy and currently sweeping televisions throughout Australia.

Guitarist Jessiah Cocks explains that the song took just a few days for the band to create with each member writing their own variation of the concept before the team came together to decide on the final version.

“We tried to make the song a good reflection of what Dreamworld is, so it’s light and fun and full of energy,” said Jessiah.

Complete with a music video filmed onsite at Dreamworld, the song is the promotional track for Dreamworld’s Summer FUNomenon, a campaign which encompasses a massive offering of ten new shows designed to entertain the whole family and two brand new attractions; the Dreamworld Woolshed and the Dreamworld Cinema.

Having each grown up in Brisbane, the group spent time reminiscing about previous Dreamworld experiences to create a song that reflects the emotion and fun of a family trip to the park.

Drummer Jack Parkes said, “It’s a fun and lively tune and we created it to feel like you would listen to it driving down the highway on your way to Dreamworld with the windows down and the sunnies on.”

“Some great memories of mine have been from trips to Dreamworld, especially the latest visit when we filmed the video clip and we all became men and braved the Tower of Terror II”

‘Blame Ringo’ formed in late 2007 finding each other through newspaper ads, local gigs and football teams and in October released their second album ‘Too Strange For Avery’.
Rave Magazine recently reviewed the band writing, "These locals have found an appealing balance – a pop group who don’t take themselves too seriously, but seriously enough to write superb songs."

Blame Ringo will make several appearances with Dreamworld over the summer and agree that the partnership has presented a spring board for future opportunities.

Lead Vocalist Peter Kilroy said, “The opportunity has allowed us to widen our audience and it feels like we have really stepped into something new.”

“Every band looks to develop their sound and this has been a good exercise for us to be able to do that. We’re looking forward to a fun summer.”
